How to make an easy affiliate marketing checklist. Before you hit publish on your first piece of affiliate content, there’s a short list of things worth checking.
Not because skipping them will doom you.
But because getting them right from the start saves you from cleanup later.
When you’ve already got months of content to fix retroactively.
First: do you actually have an affiliate account approved for the product you’re about to recommend?
This sounds obvious.
But a surprising number of beginners write the content first and apply for the affiliate program after.
Only to discover the application gets denied because they have no existing traffic yet.
Where possible, apply first, write second.
Or use networks and programs known to be beginner-friendly, like Amazon Associates.
Second: is your affiliate disclosure clearly visible, above the links, in plain language?
We covered why this matters in an earlier post — it’s not optional, and it’s easiest to build the habit from your very first post rather than retrofitting dozens of old ones later.
Third: have you actually used or thoroughly researched the product you’re recommending?
Enough to speak about it specifically rather than in vague generalities?
Readers can spot the difference between someone who knows a product’s actual features and someone who’s paraphrasing the sales page.
If you haven’t used it firsthand, at least read through real user reviews on independent sites to understand the honest strengths and weaknesses before you write a word.

Fourth: does your content answer a specific, searchable question, or is it just a general topic?
This was covered in the traffic post — vague topics don’t get found; specific questions do.
Fifth: is there a clear next step at the end of your content?
Not just an affiliate link dropped in, but an actual, natural sentence guiding the reader toward what to do next?
The phrase “Here’s the link” is a bit weak.
“If you’re ready to stop guessing and just want the tool that made this easiest for me, here’s where to start.”
That gives the reader a reason connected to what they just read, not just a bare link floating at the bottom.
Sixth: Have you double-checked that your affiliate link actually works and is tagged correctly?
This sounds almost too basic to mention.
Broken or mis tagged links are one of the most common reasons beginners lose commissions they should have earned.
A typo in a link ID means you did all the work, but the credit didn’t go through.
Seventh: Are you tracking anything at all — clicks, which posts get traffic, which links get clicked?
Even a simple spreadsheet noting which post, which link, and roughly how it’s performing will save you enormous guesswork later.
When you’re trying to figure out what to do more of.
Most take five minutes to check.
