Is a program with the highest commission the best choice? That belief might have cost you. If you picked your affiliate programs last time mostly by scanning for the biggest commission percentage or payout.

And it didn’t work out the way you hoped.
I want to walk through why commission size, on its own.
This isn’t a good filter for choosing what to promote.
Why This Filter Feels So Reasonable
Is a program with the highest commission the best choice?
Bigger commission clearly means more money per sale.
So sorting by that number feels like simple, obvious logic.
The problem is that commission size only matters if a sale actually happens.
And a high commission attached to a product you can’t genuinely sell.
Or that doesn’t fit your specific audience, produces exactly zero income.
No matter how generous the percentage looks on paper.
What Actually Determines Whether You Earn Anything
Whether the product genuinely fits your specific audience’s needs.
Even if you understand it well enough to write about it convincingly and honestly.
Whether the company behind it pays reliably and treats affiliates fairly.
Commission size sits well below all of these in terms of what actually determines your real income.
Even though it’s usually the very first thing beginners look at.
Why High-Commission Programs Can Quietly Underperform
Sometimes a product offers a large commission specifically because it’s difficult to sell.
Or because the company is compensating for a weaker product or poor market fit by offering a bigger cut to affiliates.
Remember, a high commission on a product nobody wants still adds up to zero.
In contrast, a moderate commission on something that genuinely fits your audience can meaningfully outperform it in actual practice.

What Might Have Gone Wrong Last Time
If you selected programs mainly by commission size.
Without carefully checking whether they genuinely fit your specific audience.
You may have picked products that were technically lucrative on paper.
But functionally difficult to sell to the people actually reading your content.
This mismatch, more than the affiliate model itself, is often the real reason results are disappointing.
A Better Way to Filter Programs This Time
Start with genuine audience fit.
Would the specific people reading your content actually benefit from this?
Then check whether you can honestly speak to it with real depth and confidence.
Then look at the company’s reliability and reputation.
Commission size should be closer to the last filter you apply, not the first.
It’s mainly useful for choosing between two or three options that have already passed every earlier check.
Why Moderate Commissions on the Right Fit Beat High Commissions on the Wrong One
A product that genuinely fits your audience will convert at a meaningfully higher rate.
than one that doesn’t, even at a lower commission percentage.
Five sales at a moderate commission outearn zero sales at an enormous one, every single time, and audience fit determines whether those sales happen at all.

Recognizing This Pattern Going Forward
If you find yourself drawn toward a program primarily because the commission number looks exciting.
Pause and ask honestly whether it actually fits your specific audience and whether you can speak to it with real, genuine confidence.
If you’re uncertain about either, the commission size shouldn’t be enough to override that uncertainty.
A Quick Gut-Check Worth Running
Picture a specific person from your actual audience.
And imagine genuinely recommending this product to them.
Face to face, the way you’d recommend something to a friend.
If that feels natural and honest, it’s likely a good fit, regardless of the exact commission attached.
If it feels like a stretch, the commission size won’t fix that underlying mismatch.
Revisit any programs you’re currently considering.
And run each one through audience fit and genuine understanding first, before looking at the commission structure again.

Let fit lead the decision this time, not the number.
Did commission size drive your choices more than actual audience fit last time?
